Dr. Stephen Thomas Hewitt's Obituary
Dr. Stephen Thomas Hewitt passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at the age of 58.
Steve was born on July 1, 1968, in Palo Alto, California, to Thomas and Merrie Hewitt. His mother always loved telling the story that he was due on the Fourth of July, but Steve decided to arrive a few days early because he didn't want to miss the fireworks. It was a fitting beginning for someone whose favorite holiday would forever remain the Fourth of July.
Steve devoted his professional life to caring for others. He earned his medical degree from the Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific and completed his residency at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He practiced as a family physician and hospitalist throughout the South Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada region. Although he was an accomplished physician, Steve never defined himself by his profession. He lived simply and humbly, treating every person with kindness and respect. Many people were surprised to learn he was a doctor because he never sought attention or recognition—he simply wanted to help people.
While working at Barton Memorial Hospital, Steve met the love of his life, Tausha. They were married in May 2009 and built a beautiful life together. Steve's greatest joy was his family. He was a devoted father to his son, Hunter Hewitt; his daughters, Makensie and Milleigh Hewitt; and his stepdaughters, Morgan McCauley and Madison Crutchfield. His children were the center of his world, and he treasured every opportunity to spend time with them, support them, and create lasting memories together.
Steve embraced life with endless curiosity. It seemed he discovered a new hobby every year, always eager to learn a new skill or take on a new challenge. One of Steve's greatest passions was cooking, and he found immense joy in preparing meals to share with family and friends. Whether he was trying a new recipe, gathering loved ones around the table, showing his Quarter Horses in rodeo cutting competitions, tackling home improvement projects, or loading up the RV for another family camping adventure, Steve found happiness in creating memories with the people he loved most.
He especially loved animals and found peace surrounded by them. His dogs, cats, chickens, quail, and horses were all cherished members of the family and brought him immeasurable joy. Steve had a deep appreciation for the simple things in life and believed that the best days were often spent outdoors, with family nearby and animals underfoot.
Above all else, Steve was a devoted husband, father, son, physician, and friend. He loved a good challenge, worked hard without expecting recognition, and approached life with humility, generosity, and quiet strength. His compassion touched countless lives, offering comfort and healing to patients and their families during some of life's most difficult moments. His legacy will live on in the family he loved so deeply and in the many people fortunate enough to have known him.
Steve is survived by his loving wife, Tausha Hewitt; his son, Hunter Hewitt and daughter in-law, Lisa Vaz-Hewitt; his daughters, Makensie and Milleigh Hewitt; his stepdaughters, Morgan McCauley, Madison Crutchfield and his son-in-law Jake Crutchfield; his father, Thomas Hewitt; his sister, Shawn Hewitt; and many extended family members and dear friends who will miss him deeply. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Merrie Hewitt.
The family kindly requests privacy as they navigate this profound loss. A celebration of Steve's life will be announced at a later date.
Though his time with us was far too short, Steve leaves behind a legacy of kindness, integrity, curiosity, laughter, and unconditional love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
